Wing Commander Keith W. Kaufmann took over command of 460 Squadron RAAF from Wing Commander A.L.G. Hubbard on 1 September 1942. On his first day with the Squadron, Kaufmann walked into the sergeant's mess, took off his tunic and said "I believe you blokes are pretty good drinkers; let's get stuck into it and see how good you are." He became a very popular commanding officer, mixing with all ranks. He righted many any anomaly or delay associated with promotions for air crew and ground crew alike.

He came from Victoria and served with the RAF.  Squadron Leader J. Dilworth took over command from Kaufmann on 14 December 1942 after Kaufmann had been ordered to hospital.
