Upper Ross airfield (Kelso airfield) near Townsville was built by the 96th Engineers General Services Regiment airfield construction Batallion near Laudham Park Homestead. In May 1942 the Negroes at the construction camp rioted. Much gunfire ensued and it is believed there may have been 19 killed.
Laudham Park and the Upper Ross airfield were located where the Ross River dam is located near Townsville.
According to Arthur Kelso, from Laudham Park homestead, only one aircraft ever landed at the Upper Ross River airfield. He said it was a Tiger Moth.
